What to Do After a Home Insurance Claim in NC — A Step-by-Step Guide for Triangle Homeowners

What to Do After a Home Insurance Claim in NC — A Step-by-Step Guide for Triangle Homeowners

A home insurance claim is something most homeowners hope they'll never need to file — and when the moment comes, they often don't know what to do first. Making the right moves immediately after a loss can protect your claim, prevent your payout from being reduced, and get your home repaired faster. Here's exactly what Triangle homeowners should do after suffering a covered loss.

Step 1 — Make Sure Everyone Is Safe

Before anything else, make sure your family is out of harm's way. If there's been a fire, a structural collapse, or a gas leak, get everyone out and call 911. Your home can be repaired. Everything else comes after safety.

Step 2 — Prevent Further Damage

Your homeowners policy requires you to take reasonable steps to prevent additional damage after a covered loss. If a storm has broken windows or opened your roof to the elements, cover those openings with tarps or plywood. If a pipe has burst, shut off the main water supply. Document everything before you make temporary repairs — photos and video taken immediately after a loss are critical evidence for your claim.

Failing to prevent further damage can give your carrier grounds to deny the portion of the claim that results from damage that occurred after the initial event. This step matters.

Step 3 — Document Everything Thoroughly

Before cleanup begins, photograph and video every affected area from multiple angles. Create a written inventory of damaged personal property — what the item was, when you bought it, and an estimate of its value. If you have receipts or credit card statements that support your personal property values, locate those as well.

The more thorough your documentation, the stronger your claim. Carriers are not adversarial in most cases, but they do require documentation to process claims accurately — and the burden of proof is on you as the policyholder.

Step 4 — Contact Your Insurance Agent or Carrier

Call your insurance agent as soon as possible after the loss. If you're a Triangle Insurance Alliance client, call us directly and we'll guide you through the process. We work on your behalf — not the carrier's — and we'll make sure your claim is filed correctly and completely from the start.

If you're contacting your carrier directly, have your policy number ready and be prepared to provide a basic description of what happened, when it happened, and the apparent extent of the damage. Don't speculate about causes or admit fault for anything at this stage — just report the facts.

Step 5 — Understand Your Deductible

Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in. Make sure you know your deductible before you get too far into the claims process — particularly your wind or hurricane deductible if the damage was storm-related, as that deductible may be significantly higher than your standard deductible.

If the estimated damage is close to or below your deductible, you may want to pay for repairs out of pocket rather than filing a claim. Filing a claim — even one that results in a small or zero payout — can affect your future rates and your claims history.

Step 6 — Work With Your Adjuster Carefully

Your carrier will assign a claims adjuster to evaluate your loss and determine the payout amount. The adjuster works for the insurance company. That doesn't mean they're dishonest, but it does mean their job is to assess the claim accurately from the carrier's perspective.

You have the right to get your own repair estimates. If the adjuster's assessment seems low, you can dispute it. For large or complex claims, a public adjuster — who works exclusively for you — can be worth engaging. Your independent agent can help you navigate this process and advocate on your behalf.

Step 7 — Keep Records of All Expenses

Keep receipts for every expense related to the loss — temporary repairs, hotel stays, restaurant meals if you're displaced, storage unit costs for salvaged belongings. These additional living expenses are typically covered by your policy and you'll need documentation to be reimbursed.
